opps left out some... the tests we refer to by numbers and tested by ftdna, are or should be refered to as Y-STR tests as they normally test the male's STRs.
the test for determining your haplogroup is testing SNPs and uses different markers.
See each type of testing determines where and what will be examined during the test.
All of this testing is done within the male's Y chromosone. But there are other tests like sibling tests and others that are testing different areas. One is the MT-DNA test used to identify the maternal line. This is not a Chromosone... it is not in the DNA string but is with in the cell see:
