Matches at low levels (12 or 25 markers) can be mere coincidence
Ok, every time I think I understand something a little better I read
something that throws that off. Just to be sure and this is probably a simple
question with the obvious answer, but....earlier I mentioned that there are 7
members in our group. One did the 67 marker, two did the 37 marker, one did the
25 marker and three did the 12. All matched at 12. The 67 marker and one of
the 37 markers (my cousin) were exact matches at 37. Back to the 25...he
matched all the way to markers 24 & 25. Turns out he's 4 steps from us.
(Last night in my bleariness and looking at the fine print, I counted wrong and
thought he was only two steps off.)
Anyway, I'm assuming that unlike apples and oranges, though he only did 25
and is being compared to 37 and 67, you can still interpret the genetic
distance the same because you still have to have 25 markers before you get to 37.
The reason I ask this is that in groups of 12 or groups of 25, etc., I see
that the number of steps apart within the 25 markers groups seem to be
interpreted different from how the 12 marker group and the 37 marker group distances
are interpreted as far as relationship goes. Is that right?
So, now the guy that I thought was only 2 steps away is now 4, so we can
kiss him goodbye. He's not a kissing cousin. Then, looking at the other 37
marker guy...he is one step away at marker 15, but all the rest match the 37 &
67 participants (us 10, him 9). So that's "tightly related" accordijng to
the Interpreting chart.
Now back to the 25 marker guy who is 4 off from us. It appears he is 5 off
from the last 37 marker guy. At 15 he's a 10 and the 37 guy is 9, then at 24
& 25 he's 15 & 16, to the other three 37 markers 17 & 18. Did I figure that
right?
Anytime y'all want to tell me to go take a break, I'll take the hint.
Thanks,
Laura
