Laura,
First forget paper trails. They come after genetic matching...
go back and look at G2, he is the common ancestor haplotype (he is not the common ancestor)
but G1 is related right? (Not the person who tested and not even his oldest paper trail)but some one above is his haplotype

G6 is most likely descended from the same person G1 is; G6 is 3 steps from G2 only one from G1. G6 could be as much as 4 from G1 and still be related to G1, but those 4 steps could make him 7 steps from G2.... (remember they are still related... remember the 12 - 12 they are related but not within the time frame of surnames, so we normally ignor them.) here because we can show how G6 is related through G1 we can say they are related..
