Subject: [DNA] Age of Clusters - Irish Type III
Date: Sat, 24 May 2008 12:00:45 +1000
Following the recent discussions on the age of S21/S28 etc I thought I would have another look at the age of the Irish Type III
cluster.
245 haplotypes have been gathered from Ysearch, SMGF and various surname projects and need to have at least 25 tested markers to
confirm inclusion in the cluster.
At this date I have:-
At 37 markers .... 181 complete haplotypes
At 67 markers .... 81 complete haplotypes
I discarded the CDYa,b results as they are so variable and used Leo Little's Mutation rates http://tinyurl.com/6pzxrc and 25 years
per generation.
I calculated the average squared difference at each marker, (Excel formula =STDEV(range of marker n)^2 ) and then averaged the
result across all markers except CDYa,b
The resulting cluster age for the 35 marker calculation was 993 years and for the 65 marker calculation was 966 years.
This cluster is Dalcassian from Irish counties of Clare, Limerick and Tipperary and most common surnames are:-
O'Brien 21
Bryan 10
Bryant/O'Bryant 6
Crow(e) 17
Casey 15
Butler 12
Hogan 8
Kennedy 6
Macnamara 5
The chart on http://www.irishtype3dna.org/Surnames.htm shows the present surnames associated with Cas and his descendants.
The proposition that this cluster arose with Brian Boru or his uncles and cousins around 900AD - 1000AD would seem a reasonable
assumption.
