Subject: [DNA] 12/12 match but 31/37 with common surname
Date: Sun, 1 Jun 2008 11:36:46 -0300
Hi,
Two samples, ysearch.org 8B8TK and VUPFW are both McDaniel's who have ancestors who were born in North Carolina, married in rural Tennessee around 1820 but do not have a documented common ancestor. They match exactly on 12 markers but have a GD of 6 at 37 markers. I am not an expert genealogist nor geneticists but I would suspect they are likely related more closely than the 31/37 indicates. Without documentation (which may not exist in this area and time period) to prove a connection between the two men you are assuming a certain probability that they are related based on common genealogy practices. I would assume that these sample share a common ancestor within 3 generations of their ancestors being in Tennessee in 1820 but I am not sure what the genetic probability would be since FamilyTreeDNA does not show 31/37 matches.
I'd appreciate any opinions on how to interpret this.
Thanks
Elizabeth
