Family Tree DNA "does expect in a couple of years further improvements
in sequencing technology" for the mtDNA and they told me that the Y-DNA
SNPs apparently can be tested more economically than mtDNA SNPs
because their "lab’s new testing process for Y-DNA SNPs is more versatile."

The Mega mtDNA test is of course still the best way to go because we don't
have enough of these FGS sequences to build an accurate tree and
we are certainly not close to figuring out all the important SNPs. It sounds
like the price will eventually drop. I am impatient and would like to get
individual
SNP orders for defined groups, but that is not going to happen in the near
future.

We should not forget to thank the people on this list who have contributed
more to the advancement of science than they will ever fully realize by
spending their own money and sharing their DNA results with the rest of
us. I can't think of any other hobby in which people are funding their own
basic science research and giving so freely of themselves (literally).
