Larry;

I'm afraid Ancestry is going to give the Genealogy-DNA community a black
eye over their practices. FTDNA and Genographic have done a lot to
bring respect, honesty, and genealogy-helpfulness to this field, and
many are now accepting DNA as a good tool. You see very little bad
press anymore. I'm seeing a lot of bad stories about Ancestry, and I'm
afraid that the whole community will be tarred by their brush, if they
put out a lot of wrong info. And I wonder what their pricing policies
will be, once they get the DNA piece established...

What I see as the big plus for DNA.Ancestry is still to come.  On our
DNA.Ancestry VICK group page there is a menu selection for "Trees."  I
see they have now turned this on, so I can upload a tree.  I suspect
very soon everyone that has a tree at Ancestry that connects to my tree
will be told there is a person (me) who has DNA results.  That
connection could be a powerful draw to the traditional genealogist.
Unlike other sites, Ancestry can then link us to billions of traditional
genealogy research records (including those census records).

Hopefully, DNA.Ancestry will clean up the problems with haplogroups and
matches before they push the connections very hard.  I would hate for
them to alienate the folks I hope we can draw to our project.  Some of
the most important branch defining markers for the VICK project aren't
offered by DNA.Ancestry.  So, it will be a challenge to manage the
DNA.Ancestry folks' integration into our VICK Y-DNA Surname Project.  I
would hate for someone to have to pay DNA.Ancestry for a test and then
be told they have to retest at FTDNA to get a needed marker not offered
by DNA.Ancestry.

It appears to me that Ancestry:
1. Threw together a lot of "stuff" so they could say they had a lot of
"stuff"
2. From their own knowledge of SURNAMEs, started a DNA project for every
one that wasn't at FTDNA already, and started recruiting - there are
many of the SURNAME "Projects" looking for Admins.
3. Formed "project" sites which are largely a hodge-podge of info
without any sophisticated tools to help genealogists to use the DNA
tool. [FTDNA, who does have many very good tools, may want to check the
Ancestry site regularly] - one Ancestry TAB lets you buy stuff, like
mugs, etc.
4. Isn't helpful in the DNA arena - I'm looking for a male FLEMING from
my line who has taken or would take part in DNA testing - the Ancestry
site was no help...

Well, back to census extracting...
