I found out a day or two ago about a man of French descent with the surname
Gignoux who has tested L21+. He traces his ancestry to the French Alps near
the Swiss border (and that surname extends into Switzerland). I didn't post
anything about it because he is not a member of my project and I had not yet
received his permission to mention his name and results. This gentleman
tested with 23andMe. I finally got an email from him this afternoon with his
permission to mention as much as I have.
He still has not given me the name of his most distant ancestor or any more
precise geographical information for my R-L21* Map, but what he has told me
is reliable
I have not done a lot of searching, but the surname Gignoux is listed as a
confirmed Waldensian surname (the Waldenses were an early Protestant sect in
France, Southern Germany, Switzerland and Italy) on the following site:
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~waldense/surnames.htm
I realize this is just one result, but it is continental and far from areas
of known historical British impact or influence.
