Hi Barbara,
I think, if you have a male of the surname that you are tracing it would be
much eisier that the me-DNA dta. The Y-DNA is passed from father to son
where as the mt-DNA is passes from mother to ALL children.
Even though my surname is "X" I have never heard of the maiden name of my
5th Ggrandmother because the woman takes the "sur" name of the husband.
George

Subject: [DNA] mtDNA mutations
I am a novice and mostly post at DNA Newbie in the Yahoo groups. I posed
this question there and someone advised me to bring the same question here,
even though I suspect it's more fundamental than what the experts here are
interested in. Still it can't hurt to try.
I'm one of those with an ancestor in the L haplogroup and it makes no sense
to our family. But I can't take that line back far enough on paper to
question the test results. The earliest proven record was the birth of my 2
great grandmother in 1826. I have pictures of her in mid and late life and
she had no black features and was listed in the census reports as white. Her
father was of Scots ancestry, later in Ireland, but I don't have any
information on her mother, except her first name. We have L1b results on HVR
1 and 2 from FTDNA. The test results are at mitosearch under 66TSD. I wonder
if doing the full sequence would give us a better understanding of these
results?
