Alan,
You were describing my father, his brother and his brother's son and two
daughters. They are from the Castlebar area of County Mayo (Connaught Province).
Red or strawberry blonde hair, blue eyes and fair skin. However his first
cousin (maternal but same surname) was dark hair, darker complexion and brown
eyes.
Interesting.

My own feeling is that today's north-western Irish catholics who?live in
what was?once 'the great Irishry' relatively?isolated from?permanent Viking,
Norman and ?Anglo-Irish?settlement than the rest of Ireland are probably the
most representative of the prehistoric Irish.??Nearly all have Gaelic surnames
and?contrary to the 'hell or Connaught idea they often live in the very same
areas that their surname was located in in Medieval times.? I think in many
such rural areas, very few people have moved in over the centuries, moving out
being the norm.? In my experience (to be honest I only really look at the
women !!), in that part of Ireland a big majority?have?really fair skin and?blue
eyes, usually combined with brown hair?although there is quite a lot?of red
too.? Actually come to think of it, the presenter of the program Diarmaid has
that particular type of Irish colouring I am talking about!? That is what I
think of as typically
Irish.? My guess is that?particular colouring (which is also common in north
Britain and Holland in my experience) is?a lot down to autosomals inherited
from the Mesolithic peoples from the Doggerland area although that is clearly
only a wild guess.?
Alan????
