Subject: [DNA] Surname Projects - December 31, 2008 - Part 1 of 3
Date: Sun, 11 Jan 2009 21:14:15 EST

On December 31, I visited FTDNA's Projects page and copied into a
spreadsheet all the names of the surname projects along with the number of
participants. I then sorted them in order from the largest to the smallest. Since the
number of projects with 50 or more participants is now 540, it is too large to
post all of them on this list. So instead, in a separate email, I will list
those surname projects with 125 or more. The full 50+ list can be seen at the
Worldfamilies.net website. The other testing companies don't supply
participant numbers, but a few administrators have supplied me with their figures. If
anyone with projects using the other companies, or multiple companies, would
like to be placed on the list next time, please contact me privately.

The chart below shows the totals from FTDNA projects and how they have grown
since the previous quarter. I did discover an error in last quarter's
summary, which has been corrected in this version. (Missed one project in the
count.) Those who use other companies and have notified me, are listed in the "50
plus" list but not in the summary charts.

This is the nineteenth quarter I have pulled these figures. The quarter
ending December 31 added 109 new surname projects and 6,058 new participants. The
previous quarter numbers were 140 new projects and 6,218 new participants.
Participants in projects of 50 or more participants represent about 60% of the
total. While 38% of the total were in 100+ projects, and 16% in 200+. For
the quarter October 1 through December 31, there was an average 65.85 new
participants per day, which is second only to last quarter's 75.17. For the same
quarter last year, the average was 61.18.

There may also be some duplication since individuals are allowed to
participate in more than one project. But I suspect most second projects are
geographical. I also colleted the geographical project numbers, and will post them in
a separate email.
