Have not read the ariticle but could easily beleive the R1a haplogroup could have arrived in the UK through east european Roman slaves.

A few months back our friend Anatole Klyosov surprised many of us by making
an interesting claim that R1a in the UK might have been there much longer
than the Viking influence which is often described as the oldest significant
source of R1a in Britain.
I thought about this while reading this study:
