Celibacy for secular priests within the western patriarcate under the Roman Pontiff was insisted upon at Council of Elvira and many others up to Trent but only then was it universally enforced.

Celtic Church is part of Western Patriarcate and should not be seen as a separate entity.

Those particular monks probably would not have left children. The promise of celibacy is not the reason as they would not have taken that promise, only secular priests do. Monks took a deeper commitment of VOWS of obedience, poverty and chastity.
