A member of my Fox Surname Project, who was backbone tested I-M253 because FTDNA could give a haplogroup estimate, recently upgraded to 37 markers. We put his results into Ysearch (Q5VG5) and ran a search for matches with a GD of 4 or less. Much to my astonishment, we got back 81 matches from places as varied as Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, the Isle of Skye, France and multiple English and German locations including the Channel Islands. The surnames were just as varied and there was only one other Fox in the lot (GD=4 in 32 markers.) It broke down as follows:
Five 37 marker matches with GD=2
Eleven 37 marker matches with GD=3
Fourty 37 marker matches with GD=4
Six 32 marker matches with GD=2
Seven 32 marker matches with GD=3
Twelve 32 marker matches with GD=4
He was GD=2 in 33 markers with H7UB4 which someone had put in as modal for M253-AS10 and GD=4 in 33 markers with 46E5S, which had been put in as the founder haplotype for I1a-uN1. (Attn. Ken Nordtvedt.)
I've never run into this sort of thing before - I generally have found no matches with GD=4 or less in 37 markers for my other Fox Project members unless there is a known family or geographical connection. Have others experienced similar effects?
