They are testing autosomal SNPs designed to be "ancestry informative
markers." These are first identified by comparing pure bred dogs. They've been
used to demonstrate that a mixed breed dog doesn't have the markers
characteristic of outlawed breeds like pit bulls.

But results vary, depending on the lab and the number of breeds it has in
its database. Also, the more mixed the dog (e.g. if the grandparents of the
dog are mixed breed themselves), the more difficult it is to find a
characteristic DNA signature.
