ancestors by generation, not by lineage. They need to start only with their
ggrandparents or gggrandparents, since they should already know the names of
close cousins

You're right that most folks wouldn't care about surnames of close cousins,
but those with adoptions or NPEs in recent generations could find those
names helpful.
