Carrying the Thalassemia trait does provide an evolutionary advantage around the Mediterranean. It offers protection from malaria. That is why the trait thrived in that area and not others. Sometimes, even having the disease (not just being a carrier) in those areas was/is an advantage because the symptoms of the disease in some people can be mild and less dangerous than malaria.

Another, inherited and incurable blood disease which also affects the production of haemoglobin , is called, Thalassaemia , which adversely affects the lives of some people who live in countries in the Mediterranean area. Again, this is not an evolutionary advantage. Sometimes, nature gets it wrong, n'est pas !
