I have found Ysearch to be very unreliable as far as haplogroup
designations. Is there a haplogroup "A" FTDNA project or has anyone
looked for these haplogroups in the various FTDNA geographical and
surname projects? I don't remember ever seeing one, but then I wasn't
looking.

You are quite right. A year ago I have found that from 107 haplotypes in
"Haplogroup A" section of YSearch, 69 belonged to R1b1b2
