Julie,
I agree that testing with FTDNA is an excellent suggestion. I would also suggest that, if you can afford it, also accepting GeneTree's offer, making sure that you follow the procedures to donate to SMGF. Through GeneTree you have easy access to over 100,000 family trees that are both matched to DNA and independently researched by the Sorrenson foundation. The additional cost of the discounted GeneTree test is likely going to be less than having a similar test done at FTDNA.
Having current results at both places drastically increases the chances for finding matches. Note, I am a test company agnostic and have tested at FTDND, GeneTree, Ancestry.com and 23andMe as well as donating to SMGF.

I think it is possible that the donor belongs to a rare branch of haplogroup K, or perhaps O. If he is a K then I don't think any of the company or on-line predictors would come up with the right answer.
I would strongly support the recommendation to transfer to FTDNA with an upgrade - this should trigger a free "backbone" SNP test. After that the full Deep Clade test might be worth considering.
Please keep us posted with any developments.

He has also received an offer of retesting mtDNA at a discounted price from Gene Tree. See below:

Your results are sufficient to search the database for DNA matches and to receive a Haplogroup prediction. However, even though your mtDNA was tested across regions HV-I,II,III, there are a few gaps in your results.
