Subject: [DNA] Surname Projects - September 30, 2011 - Part 1 of 3
Date: Sun, 30 Oct 2011 17:22:12 -0400 (EDT)

On September 30, I visited FTDNA's Projects page and copied into a
spreadsheet all the names of the surname projects along with the number of
participants. I then sorted them in order from the largest to the smallest. Since
the number of projects with 50 or more participants is now 848, it is too
large to post all of them on this list. So instead, in a separate email, I
will list those surname projects with 175 or more. Terry Barton has
graciously offered me the use of one of his sites on Worldfamilies.net, so you can
now see the full combined 50+ list and the summary listed below at
>http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/top50. I wish to thank Terry for his
assistance. The other testing companies don't supply participant numbers, but a
few administrators have supplied me with their figures. If anyone with
projects using the other companies, or multiple companies, would like to be placed
on the list next time, please contact me privately.

The chart below shows the totals from FTDNA projects and how they have
grown since the previous quarter. Those who use other companies and have
notified me, are listed in the "50 plus" list but not in the summary charts.

This is the thirtieth quarter I have pulled these figures. The quarter
ending September 30 added 78 new surname projects and 8,052 new participants.
The previous quarter numbers were 92 new projects and 5,945 new
participants.

Participants in projects of 50 or more participants represent about 67% of
the total. While 48% of the total were in 100+ projects, and 26% in 200+.
The last quarter figures were 66%, 46%, and 25% respectively. For this
quarter, there was an average 88 participants added to projects per day. This
is the highest daily average since I have been keeping track. This compares
to last quarter's 65. For the same quarter last year the average was 51.

One reason for the big increase may be due to the transferring DNA
Heritage data/participants to FTDNA beginning early in the quarter.

There may also be some duplication since individuals are allowed to
participate in more than one project. But I suspect most second projects are
geographical. There are also several projects in this total that are technically
not a surname project. However, they are listed at FTDNA as a surname
project, so I don't try to make any determinations. I also colleted the
geographical project numbers, and Haplogroup projects and will post them in a
separate email.
