One problem with surname projects--especially the large projects, --is that most people aren't related to each other. We have 27 different families in my Britton project and many others have even more. Administrators can't possibly become effectively involved with the genetics and genealogy of so many families and haplogroups. The only thing most of these families have in common is the historical accident of their surname.
Furthermore, the size and scope of some of these projects is apt to kill the enthusiasm of even a dedicated Administrator.

Perhaps we need to start thinking of surname projects more as an entry point for genetic genealogy. Now that autosomal testing has come of age, projects open to men and women could be based on descent from a common ancestor or ancestors.
