"Variability" is a pretty vague (and subjective) term. Intraclade
variance calculations (e.g. using Ken's tool) for the subclades of R-
M73 yields a TMRCA estimate somewhat younger than the TMRCA of R-V88.

One may be higher or lower than the other by chance, but we don't let
that distract us if we are smart. Even if you wanted to ignore L389
(why would you, for what motive?), you still know that R-M73 and R-
P312 are both P297+ and V88- while R-V88 is (of course) P297- V88+.
Even if the STR genetic distance between one pair is lower than for
the other pair, the structure of the phylogenetic tree is not affected
by that happenstance.
