The differences between your results indicate that a somewhat unusual type of mutation event has happened in his line since the generation of your common ancestor John Griggs. This type of mutation event is called a recLOH event. RecLOH events can affect more than one marker at a time. The DYS459 and DYS464 markers where you differ are located close to each other on the Y, and they can both be affected by the same recLOH event. The differences between this cousin and the rest of you could have been and almost certainly were caused by a single recLOH event, and so your genetic distance is really only 1.

Hello List, I and five of my cousins are participants in the “Grigg Y-Chromosome DNA Surname Project” at “Family Tree DNA” and we all descend from John Griggs of Gravesend, Kings County, New York. The five of us all match exactly at the 25 marker level, however we recently have a new participant who has a well-documented paper trail back to our John Griggs of Gravesend and he matches the five of us exactly at the 25 marker level except for markers DYS459 and DYS464 which, based on Family Tree DNA’s criteria, appears to kick him out of our group. The five of us all have values 9-10 at marker DYS459 and 12-14-15-17 at marker DYS464, while our new cousin has 9-9 at marker DYS459 and 12-12-17-17 at marker DYS464. We all fall into Haplogroup R1a1a, including our new cousin. Can anyone confirm or refute that our new cousin does have a genetic distance of five and thus cannot be considered a match with the five of us or is there something else we shoul!
