I've done this a number of times over the years and have failed each time.
I think it's up to a total of 5 or 6 different times now. They include two
different hairs with follicles, stamps, an envelope and two teeth. Some of
the items dates from the 1960s, so not terribly old. And the hairs did have
visible follicles.

Jim, email FTDNA about this testing. I asked them about extracting dna
from
1860s letter envelopes and stamps, and was told that testing was not
recommended because if could destroy the old materials and may not
produce
any dna results.

Nearly all of the hair ends are inside the fob so I can't see whether
they
have roots. The few on the outside are trimmed, which is what I would
expect. Of course, it's all moot if there is no lab that can extract DNA
from old hair for me. Has anyone on this list successfully gotten DNA
from
old hair? If so, what lab did you use?
