For now I am trying to recruit a couple more of my sisters and some 1st
cousins from my other aunts.

Because I have tested so many close family members with a wide variance of
results, I am well aware of the inherent difficulty of exact predictions.
However, I still believe that the answer will be clear in the vast majority
of first cousin cases, as I stated.
Robert, yours is not completely clear cut, but based on the extremely low
sharing between the paternal cousin and you, I would say that there is a
good likelihood that your theory is correct. However, are you saying that
the same cousin matches your sister at 9.77 percent? That is awfully high
for a first cousin once removed. I have not seen a first cousin as low as
yours, nor a first cousin once removed as high, so I can understand why you
need more people to test before you reach a conclusion. I will be
interested in Tim Janzen's opinion on this since he has been compiling these
comparisons from his only family studies.

There can be quite a bit of variation in the %. I am assuming that the
stated ancestry is for both of my aunts are correct. Maternal 1st cousin and
paternal 1st cousin.
When compared to me (male), my two female 1st cousins show 12.2% and 6.09%
When compared to my sister they show 12.6% and 9.77%
I have been looking at the possibility that the paternal 1st cousin may
actually be a 1st cousin once removed. My grandmother could have raised my
aunt as a daughter when she was in-fact a granddaughter??

Hi Robyn,
Yes, autosomal DNA can distinguish between full cousins and half cousins.
For first cousins, you would expect somewhere around 12.5 percent of shared
DNA. For half first cousins you would expect somewhere around 6.25 percent.
In the vast majority of cases, you will get a clear answer.

Can DNA testing distinguish between half cousins and full cousins, where
both individuals (male), have the same grandmother.
