Dear Gary,
What you are doing is very similar to what I have been doing with a
Youngman project I am working on. See
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GENEALOGY-DNA/2011-05/13043235
85 for an earlier summary of that project. I started by phasing my mom's
DNA using her 23andMe results as well as those for my dad and me. I was
able to phase about 94% of her DNA. Using the data from all of these
relatives I was then able to determine that a 5 million base pair portion of
chromosome 2, a 3 million base pair portion of chromosome 10, and a 4
million base pair portion of chromosome 12 were passed down to her from her
early Youngman ancestor John Youngman (b. ca 1793). See my mom's chromosome
map at
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21841126/chromosome%20map%20Betty%20Janzen.zip for
more precise information about this. I thus know about 12 million base
pairs (or about .4%) of John Youngman's genome at this point in time. I
know that specific regions of other relatives' DNA were also passed down to
them from John Youngman as well, but because the data for the rest of the
relatives isn't yet phased I don't know the actual DNA sequences that they
received from John Youngman. Testing children and spouses of these
relatives would allow me to do that if I pursue that.
If you can test the spouses and at least one child of each of the 13
people you have participating thus far then you will be in a good position
to reconstruct at least a portion of the DNA of Abraham Miller (b. 1758)
because at that point you will be able to phase the data for the 13
participants. As John Chandler pointed out, the more descendents of Abraham
Miller you have tested then the more DNA of Abraham Miller (b. 1758) that
you will be able to reconstruct. If you don't phase any of the descendents'
data then you will be able to identify specific regions of their chromosomes
that came from Abraham Miller, but you won't know the phased segments since
all Family Finder data comes to you as unphased data.
Feel free to contact me if you want any additional input on your
project.
Sincerely,
Tim Janzen

Subject: [DNA] Phasing 4th Cousins
I've been trying to figure out if it's possible to partially reconstruct
blocks of DNA from my 5th great grandfather.
I've had 13 of his descendants (see chart at:
http://www.millerfamilyhistory.com/Abraham%20Descendancy%20DNA%2002.jpg)
tested with FTDNA's Family Finder. They descend from 7 different
children of one common ancestor, Abraham Miller. Most are 4th or 5th
cousins.
If this would be possible would anyone here be interested in consulting
on such a project?
Thanks!
Gary Miller
