The National Archives of the UK was launched in April 2003. The institution
has one of the largest archival collections in the world, spanning 1000
years of British history, from Domesday Book to government papers recently
released to the public. You can see this collection at Kew, West London, or
view certain documents online. The National Archives also advises people on
the location of non-public records and manuscripts relating to British
history.

Recent additions to the National Archives' Online Documents include the
First World War Campaign Medal Index cards (also known as the ‘Medal Rolls
Index'). These 5.5 million cards record the medal entitlement of almost all
individuals -- men and women, officers and soldiers who fought in the
British Army and Royal Flying Corps during the Great War. Almost all of the
men and women who saw active service overseas were awarded a campaign medal,
making this essentially the most complete listing of all men and women,
officers and soldiers who fought in the First World War.

Moreover, all Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) wills, from 1384 to 1858
are now available to download. More than 1 million digital images of wills
covering six centuries are available as a complete digital resource. There
is a modest fee for downloading the will images.
