Subject: ** Ireland Surname Queries for the week of 24 Aug 97 **
Message-ID: <>
This is a summary of queries posted to soc.genealogy.surnames.ireland
within the last seven days which pertain to Ireland (including North
Ireland). Each of the lines listed below was the Subject line of a
recent surname query or response.
This regular posting is motivated by the soc.genealogy.uk+ireland FAQ.
There, it is recommended that posts which simply seek information
about a specific person or family (i.e. "surname queries") are better
directed to the newsgroup soc.genealogy.surnames.ireland, which has
been set up specifically for such postings. That newsgroup is
archived and moderated (with an associated mailing list GENNAM-L).
The chief role of the moderator is to ensure that each surname query
has an informative subject heading in a standard style, aimed at
facilitating either manual or automated searches of the postings and
the archives. This is so that users can readily identify messages of
likely interest that they can then read at leisure.
In contrast, the posting to this group of large numbers of surname
searches greatly diminishes the utility and practicability of the
group for discussion of more general issues and problems related to
Irish genealogy. (Since soc.genealogy.ireland is not moderated, there
is no practicable way of ensuring that messages sent to it have
informative subject lines, so that the user's task of quickly
distinguishing surname queries from other messages is much more
difficult.)
Please do NOT ask me for more information on the names listed
below, or for copies of the associated posts. This message was
produced automatically by scanning the Subject lines of messages
currently active on this system, and I do not know anything about
them beyond what you see here. At the end of this message, there
is a list of suggestions for retrieving the original queries.
Suggestions for improving this announcement service will be
gratefully received.

SUGGESTIONS FOR RETRIEVING QUERIES:
Usenet:
To read the full text of these messages, merely go to
soc.genealogy.surnames and search for the corresponding
subject.
WWW:
There are powerful WWW searching systems for the
soc.genealogy.surnames archives which may help. Here are URLs for
two online archives of soc.genealogy.surnames:
<URL:http://searches.rootsweb.com/sgsurnames.html>
<URL:http://apple.ease.lsoft.com/archives/gennam-l.html>
(The second of these archives is likely not to last much longer,
and the first is under construction.... please bear with us!)
E-mail:
A system for searching and retrieving individual messages, rather
than potentially enormous weekly log files, has recently been
re-introduced by the LISTSERV authors. An introduction to this
system can be retrieved by sending mail to
with the following text in the message
body:
GET GENNAM-L/FAQ.ARCHIVES
Note that this command must go in the body of your message, not in
the subject line! The subject line will be ignored by the
LISTSERV system.

Dexter,
Have you looked at the Hayes "Manuscript Sources for the History of Irish
Civilization"? FHL # 1440939 through 1440943. Some big libraries may
have a bound-book set (like the FHL in Salt Lake or the National Library
of Ireland), but the most likely place to find it will be on microfilm
through the Family History Center.
It is indexed by Name, Place and Subject, so you can go at it all those
ways.
Also, don't overlook The Casey Collection. "O'Kief, Coshe Mang etc."
This set is in many big libraries, with indexes, in book form, or you can
also get it on film. Lots of information on Co. Cork.
I am not familiar with this particular family, but I do know that this
name may also be found as Jacobs, Igoe, Mac Iago, etc.

My husband's ancestor, Gustavus Allen M.D. was born 1792, Letterkenney,
co. Donegal. About 1810, he went to study medicine with a Dr. Patterson
in Londonderry. Would there be any sort of apprenticeship record or
record with the Royal college of Physicians? If so, where might I go to
search for these records? Would he have gone to University first?
Thank you very much.

Message-ID: <01bcb0f9$b71b5ba0$>
I am seeking a link between my g-grandfather, Michael Clifford, who was
born on March 19, 1847, probably in Cork, and who emigrated to Wisconsin,
in the US, in 1856 or so.
His father, name unknown, was already in Wisconsin. Michael came over when
he was nine years old, alone. Michael farmed his entire life in Mapleton,
Blue Earch County, Minnesota. He died on April 9, 1930. He had ten
children, eight of whom lived. I never knew any of them, save for my
grandfather, who was also named Michael. My granfather's brothers, and the
states they lived in in 1930, are as follows:
Tim....Gary, Indiana
Frank...DeGraff, Minnesota
William....Dixon, Illinois
George.....Mankato, Minnesota
Any leads toward finding Irish roots/relatives would be appreciated. My

I am looking for possible relatives in Co. Down around Killileagh and
Killinchy. My father was born in Glasgow, but his father came from
Ballyminstraugh and his mother from Killinchy.. His father. John Bailie who
married Mary Jane Finlay in Killileagh on Aug 24 1878. The family moved to
Glasgow where my father and other members of the family were born. After
the family moved to Glasgow, they added another l to the family name so
that it was spelt Baillie.
On my grandmother's side of the family, I would like to hear from any of
the Finlay family who live in County Down and who could be related. I have
more details of the Finlays that we could compare . Please reply to this
news group or to my e-mail address .

Subject: A Farrell kidnapping
Message-ID: <>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
A few years ago, I tracked down a wonderful lady who would have been
my mother's second cousin. She told me a few things about my
Farrells. One of the stories that she told was about her mother's
'kidnapping'. I'm hoping that someone will recognize this story and
contact me with more Farrell info.
John Farrell was born in 1851 in Dysart/Tisrara, Roscommon. He was
the son of Judith (Flynn) and James Farrell. There were a few other
children, Anne (Gately), Bernard, Michael and Mary (McCormick), possibly
more. All of the children came to this country except John and Anne.
John had several children, one of whom was Annie Farrell (Collins), who
was born about 1888. John's older children came to this county. When
they learned that John had remarried a Margaret Flynn in 1897, they
didn't want the younger children who stayed behind (one of them was
Annie) to be brought up by the new wife. The older children went back
to Ireland and 'kidnapped' the younger children. John learned of the
kidnapping in time to get to the dock and see the boat pull away. He
never got them back; they stayed in this country. John had several more
children and supposedly their descendants are living in Ballinasloe,
Galway. Annie eventually ended up living with my ggrandmother Mary
Farrell McCormick in a brownstone boarding house that she ran near the
Immaculate Conception Church in Boston. Because of the kidnapping, Annie
was always afraid to go back to Ireland. She died in 1984.
Does this story or any of the names sound familiar to anyone?
To reply please remove the 22 from my address.
Thank you
