In the same way that we seem to find Brian/Bryan often used as a
nickname for Bernard (though we don't understand why), does anyone have
knowledge of "Owen" being used as a nickname for "Eugene"?
We seem to have stumbled across two unrelated family cases of this
happening. We aren't sure what to make of it as it isn't what we would
have expected.
Can you help/explain???
Thankyou,
Greg and Pat McCabe

Hello genealogy friends,

I have had a MAJOR hard-drive crash - Totally unrecoverable.
Fortunately, I had just done a back-up of my genealogy about 15 minutes
before the crash.

If you have sent in any requests for look-ups of given-names off the
"Given Name Index" in the past 2 days,

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/hills/1739/genelinks.html

please re-send them to me. They may have be lost before I could get them
printed out.

If there are any messages for checking surname information that we may
have connected on in some way, please re-send me these messages too.

Thank you for all your help and patience.

Trying to find information on Robert (Robin) Mawhinney, b. I795 in Derry
or Newry County, Ireland. Married a Mary Wilson b. 1804, in Church of
Ireland in 1824 and they emigrated to Canada in 1831 with 3 children and
his two brothers and a sister. I have a very complete tree of his
descendants but can't find anything before they came to Maces Bay, New
Brunswick. Also looking for information on James Robertson, b. 1849 in
Ireland and emigrated to Canada in 1869. His father's name was William
and they were members of the Calvin or Presbyterian Church. His
children's names were William, Alexander and Annie which may have also
been the names of his siblings. Any help in finding more about these
folks will be much appreciated.

I think Owen is Gaelic for Eugene for when Owen is mentioned in Latin in
the Annals its Eugenius or a variation.

Subject: Where Did You Come From? - THOMAS F. BURKE

The Burke line of my family leading back from my maternal grandmother has
been a stonewall for many years. I know he was from Ireland---but from
where?

My great-great-grandfather Thomas F. Burke was born in 1861 and came to
this country in 1880. (I believe the "F" is for Francis.) According to his
death record, his parents were named Thomas Burke and Margaret O'Brien. He
married Mary J. Connelly (exact spelling of the last name a little
uncertain) in 1883, though I have never been able to locate a marriage
record in either the town (Greenwich) or state (Connecticut) records where
they lived. (Since they are both listed in later censuses as having come
over in 1880-1881, and their first son was born 1884, I assume they were
married in the U.S. and not in Ireland, but I don't know for certain.)

[Mary's parents, by the way, were James Connelly and Mary Donough.]

No record I have consulted has yet told me from where in Ireland either
Thomas F. Burke or Mary J. Connelly came from, neither county nor townland.
That's why I've been stumped about going back further. I've seen their
death records and read their obituaries. I've seen their children's birth
and marriage records. A kind researcher I contacted through the ROOTS list
looked up his naturalization record. I've asked every living descendant by
writing to them. And still, no clues. All the records say is "Ireland."
(Actually, different older members of the family have offered up Tipperary,
Galway, and Cork as being where they thought Thomas Burke was from, but
none had proof, and with that kind of discrepancy, I obviously couldn't
pursue these as clues.)

Thomas F. Burke and Mary J. Connelly had 5 children born in the 1880s and
early 1890s in Greenwich, CT: Thomas James (my GGF); Katherine; Mary Ann;
Margaret F.; and John William (known as "Jack"). They all lived in
Greenwich, CT (as did most of the family up until the 1980s, when there was
a sort of diaspora to the far reaches of the country: Maine, Florida,
California, and elsewhere).

Since Thomas Burke is such a common name, doing blind searches of indexes
in Ireland is worthless. Also, since Thomas was Catholic but was born
before 1864, Irish civil records are useless. Since he and Mary travelled
to the U.S. in 1880-1881, there are no available indexes for passenger
lists.

In short, I have been unable to unearth any records with a firm clue toward
county or townland of birth which might help me pursue research in Ireland.
So I've been stumped as to how to proceed further back.

Anybody have any good suggestions for places to look for information that I
have not mentioned?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Steven Pisano
New York City

I've checked into this myself. As best as I can find, it is because the
Irish name Eoghan (which is pronounced "Owen") was commonly Anglicized as
Eugene because of its visual, if not aural, similarity.

My first Irish descendant was Patrick Boyle, who came from the tiny town
of Ballintoy, County Antrim, about 1847, about in the middle of the potato
famine. I would like very much to learn more about the family, but have
been stymied by the fire that destroyed many of the old Irish records and
the fact that the family must have been in the Catholic minority in
Northern Ireland. I wonder if they had
more family in the Irish republic. I lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, for
several years and used the Mormon library to check as far as I could, since
it has the largest genealogic collection in the world. I found the
passenger ships' logs full of variations of that very common Irish name,
but had no way to determine which might be the right one or pursue it any
further. If anyone reading this has an idea for me, I would be happy to
know. My E-mail is DRKATEB @AOL.com. Kate

Subject: [INFO] Looking for a professional researcher?

Posting-Frequency: 7 days
Last-Modified: 1997/08/25
Version: 1.14

If you are looking for a professional researcher to help you, then the
correct place to look is in the soc.genealogy.marketplace newsgroup. As
an aid to find people who cover the United Kingdom and Ireland, I post a
monthly list of researchers to soc.genealogy.marketplace.

The document lists only the professional researchers who have requested
to be included. The intention is that the list should be posted to the
soc.genealogy.marketplace newsgroup on a monthy basis. This is to ensure
that adverts are not posted to the soc.genealogy.britain newsgroup or
the soc.genealogy.ireland newsgroup or their associated mailing lists.
A pointer message will be posted every week to remind readers where to look.

No endorsement of any kind is given or implied in any way. It is up to
the reader to ensure themselves that the researcher they will to use is
reputable.

If you want the lastest version of the list, you can either wait until
it is posted again, or look for it on the WWW at the URL
http://www.meertech.demon.co.uk/genuki/adverts.htm, or via email by
sending the following message:

Yes 01365 is the area code (Telephone NOT Postal)
NI being part of the UK use the British postal codes.
They look something like BT5 2WK

This would be for a manual telephone exchange not automatic with a dialing
code. I think most if not all are now automatic.

I suspose this has been asked before, but does anyone know if and where
the old records of the landlords who assisted in the somewhat forced
emmigration from the Ireland during the famine to America, Canada, and
Australia may be located? I am specifically interested in Wexford
County families. (ROWE) Are there records in Liverpool as there are in
Hamburg for Germany passengers?

Researching names - Harding and Rowe in Kentucky, Haas and Oelschlegel
in New Orleans, and Bavaria, Linnemann or Lindemann in Hannover Germany,
Hasenwinkel and Grupin near Magdeburg Germany, Bekebrede, Schumacher,
and Esselmann in Nord Holland and West Hannover areas. Try our Hofmann
Family Home Page, there are many more names there and some good links to
other research aids.
