Hi Folks,

Does anybody know the origin of the surname KISSAM? I have heard that
it may be derived from O'Caisson or something like that (not sure of the
spelling).

Would appreciate any information anyone may have on KISSAM.

I am researching a family named TANDY which was connected variously with
families named SMYTH, HAMILTON & COOPER:

Thomas Tandy of Drewstown b circa 1699, High Sheriff Co Meath, m c. 1736/7
Marion SMYTH, d.o. William Smyth and Mary King (d.o. Robert King).

Their grandson John Tandy of Johnsbrook m 1802 at Drogheda Mary Montgomery
whose mother was Hon Catherine Hamilton d.o. Viscount Boyne.

Further along the Tandy genealogy there is an Alicia Tandy who married _ _
_ Cooper, possibly about 1805, who had a son John Cooper. There was also
an
Elizabeth Tandy who in 1843 married one George Cooper Stawell.

I wonder if these families could be distantly connected and related one
way
or another to Thomas Cooper Smyth?

I am looking for anyone with any interest in the FORAN family from Oghill,
Monestervan, County Kildare.

Just today I found a reference to a John FORAN who came to the USA...(New
York) on March 28, 1804. I was not aware of him before. My gggrandfather,
Matthew FORAN and his brother James came to New York in 1850...there were two
other brothers but their names are as yet unknown to me. Matthew and James
both finally ended up in central Illinois working as farmers on their own
land. Both Matthew and James were married when they landed in New York and
both were married to Murphy girls from the same area in County Kildare. The
family was staunch Roman Catholic.

James' only girl, Mary Catherine FORAN stayed in New York and married a Peter
McCORMICK from the same area in Ireland. Peter's mother was a KENNA , also
from the same area.

Gort is a field or a cornfield. 'Fraid I can't help with the extensions to
these names. Field of the High King should be Gortna something Ri (maybe).
I haven't got a great dictionary here at the moment.

Eas is a waterfall from what I can see thought here may be other words
also. Don't know them

The names would have begun as Gort na or Gort an: and then the extension,
which will probably have changed as people wrote it down in othr countries.
I know Castletownbere but not any of the placenames. Sorry I can't be of
more help.

Hello Karla, The migration to Barbados may have been forced. I'm reading a
book entitled The Seafarers A History of Maritime America 1620-1820, by
Robert Carse.
(pub.1964 by Harper and Row).
He tells of Irish and Scots being forced into indentured service for
fighting the Puritan Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell.
"The Irish had been taken after the failure of their uprising in 1649,
sent into life servitude...Cromwell stated in writing his sentiments...
without waste of language (after) storming of Dhrogheda, 'When they
submitted, those officers were knocked on the head, and every tenth man of
the soldiers killed, and the rest shipped for Barbados."
According to Carse, Thousands of Irish and Scots were sold to planters for
slave labor.

Sometime after that around 1662, Admiral William Penn, Father of the
founder of PA. and Gen.Venables were sent by Cromwell to take Hispaniola
from the Spanish. They stopped first in Barbados ad offered freedom to
Irish enslaved on the plantations there if they joined the expedition.
They failed to take Hispaniola, but did capture Jamaica, so in theory some
of those Irish could have ended up freed by that adventure.

Sorry I can't give more specifics, good luck in your study of the family.
Sincerely, Kevin McCloskey, Kutztown PA

The following posting has nothing to do with Ireland or Irish.
I suppose I am protesting as I have ancestors, one b in England, the other
b in Ireland, so the split makes it more difficult for me. All of my
research now is Ireland and England for GGrandparents, etc.

GENBRIT forbids any Irish postings. If you post one you will be notified
almost immediately to go elsewhere. I don't understand why the following
has been allowed more than once, nothing done to stop it.
None of the addresses apply to Ireland, people looking for ancestors in the
countries listed, will not be on an Irish list, so unnecessary mail for us
and no help to anybody. There could be a rare case where someone would be
looking for an address for one of the areas but they can find many more by
asking others or searching the net.

For several years I have been trying to trace a Thomas (Tommy) MOORE
who was said to have been born in Belfast, Northern Ireland C1880 and
left home to "go to America." He was never heard from again and it is
not known whether he did indeed reach America.

In my search I came across the following on Family Tree Maker's
Genealogy Site.

Name Est.Date Location Archive Type

Moore, Thomas Unknown Unknown World Family
Tree

I'm not totally familiar with how the system works, but gather I could
buy the CD-ROM that would contain the details shown in the index or I
could (at a cost) get Family Tree Maker to provide me with the
information.

Are amateur genealogists who have bought the CD-ROM allowed to share
the information with others or is it deemed to be copyrighted.

Any help that can be provided to enlighten me would be appreciated.

Thanks.
