Subject: Owen Reilly; Arvagh, County Cavan to Scotland to New York City
Date: 21 May 1998 04:46:18 GMT
Searching for my family roots in Ireland. My great grandfather, Owen Reilly,
was born June 22, 1874 in Arvagh< County Cavan to Michael Reilly and Mary
Rowlett. Birth was witnessed by Jane Foster. His birth name was "John" Reilly
but his name was later changed on his bith certificate to Owen Reilly on Sept.
26, 1938. His father, Michael Reilly, was a carpenter. He had 13 brothers and
sisters in County Cavan. Names known are: Willie, Michael, James, Rosie, Kate,
Della, and Bridget. At some point he left Ireland for Glasgow, Scotland wher
he was a policeman. My great grandfather married Minnie Legget in Glasgow.
She was born in Scotland to Thomas and Mary Legget, raised in County Sligo and
attended a school known as Urseline (a Catholic school), and somehow wound back
in Glasgow. Date of Marriage is not known. They had several children although
there seems to be some confusion on how many as that some died in Scotland or
at a very young age. The names known are: Jackie (John Thomas), Helen, Peter,
James, Vincent, Trudy, Robert, and Margaret. Margaret Reilly Lansing was my
grandmother. Some of the children were baptised at St. John's Chirch in
Glasgow, Scotland on Portugal Street. Owen Reilly became a U.S. citizen on
Jan. 20 1938 and passed away in 1960 in New York City. After they arrived in
America majority of the family in New York City and most are buried at Calvary
Cemetery in Long Island City. The last contact w/ a Reilly who was born in
County Cavan was in the late 1960's w/ Michael Reilly,my great grandfather's
brother, who was in the Panama Canal at the time. He apparaently died around
1970 or so in the Canal Zone. I should also note that my great grandparents
came to the US after 1900 but before World War I. My great grandfather served
in the British military (army I believe) during WWI.
This must sound confusing as that I know it is to me. If there are any
suggestions on who or whta to contact and where to go, I would appreciate it
greatly. I have always been fascinated w/ Ireland and proud to be Irish. My
desire is to go to Ireland one day. I know I must have some lomg lost relative
out there. In the meantime, I will keep images of Ireland in my heart and
visit via the internet.
Thank you,
Lisa Lansing
