I have done some research on the subject and find though there may have
been minor training / schooling in local places, the major sems are / were
Maynooth, St. Patricks (1795), and All Hallows Dublin (1842). Prior to
this students for the priesthood were trained on the continent. The French
Revolution and te Napoleonic wars closed many. Monastic orders were other
possibilities?

unfortunately no history online . . .
and
http://www.allhallows.ie
a wee bit of history
and Kilmore Diocese (Cavan)
http://www.cavannet.ie/kilmore/histkilm.htm
a lot more history. General info here . . . interesting!

I also find that nephews of priests seem to become the next generation of
priest early on. Perhaps the second son or beyond, as the first would have
inherited the land?? Hedge schools were training grounds prior to the
National Schools c 1834. Most of my study has been in the Diocese of
Clogher (so Ulster). Would love to learn more . ..

HTH ..

Seminaries educating young men for the priesthood in Leinster,
Connaught or Munster before 1850?<
