Subject: Family Heritage Centres - an alternative approach

Fellow Listers

An alternative approach to Family Heritage Centres would be to place
microfilms at local libraries with free access. This would allow
access to:
1. Private individuals doing their own research
2. Professional researchers searching for a fee

Those falling into category 1 above...which I suspect is most of us
would then only have ourselves to blame if we couldn't find the
records. The Irish nation would then reap the benefits of tourism as
we would stay locally knowing that we had access to the records. This
system or variation of it would avoid the criticism of over charging,
slow results etc that we see on this and other groups.

There is nothing quite like doing the research yourself as I am sure
those who have done this will agree.
Added advantages are that we would get to know the local librarians as
opposed to rolling up to a Family Heritage Centre where it is pay
upfront and wait.

If the Irish Parliament spent its money on microfilming and
distributing it to local libraries it would escape the adverse
comments that pervade Irish research at present. The ball would be in
the researchers court and if you don't find a record then it either
doesn't exist or you haven't looked properly.
