Subject: Pay-For-View Genealogy???
Date: Sat, 23 Oct 1999 14:33:36 GMT
Greetings from the Genealogical Society of Ireland
http://www.dun-laoghaire.com/genealogy
Folks,
Hereunder, please find information received this morning from Sen Barrett,
T.D. (Member of the Irish Parliament - Dil ireann) regarding the Irish
Heritage Council's pay-for-view proposals presented to Government. This
follows the total rejection of these proposals by this Society in the August
issue of "The Genie Gazette".
Dil ireann - 20th October 1999
Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht & the
Islands, Ms. Sle de Valera, T.D. from Deputy Sen Barrett, Dn Laoghaire.
No. 145 - Ref: 20807/99
Question:
To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the plans,
if any, she has to introduce pay for view facility for genealogists in
Ireland - Sen Barrett.
Written Reply from Minister:
The bodies under my aegis which hold records of interest to genealogists are
the National Library and the National Archives. There are no plans for the
introduction of pay-for-view charges in these institutions.
The Deputy's Question may be prompted by the Heritage Council's Report
presented to me at the end of 1998 on the provision of genealogical services
in Ireland and to the recommendation therein which provides for a usage
charge in the context of a proposal for a new Irish Family History Research
Centre. I have informed the Heritage Council that I have not accepted the
principle of this proposal.
