Subject: Obituary for Terence Kelly
Date: 1 Oct 2001 16:40:42 -0700
On August 3, 2001, I posted an obituary for a Winifred Kelly, my
grandmother. She lived near Monasteraden in county Sligo and died on
February 21, 1921.
Her husband, Terence Kelly, died on February 3, 1907. His headstone
reads Terence Kelly of Coolavin.
I'm not having any luck with the local library in getting a copy of an
obituary from the Monasteraden area so I'm going to take a long shot
here. Is there a special way to obtain inter library loans for these
newspapers? If not, could someone from the Sligo area look up the
obituary and e-mail a copy to me?
Many kind thanks to Jim McDonald, who provided the following helpful
information ... my understanding, or hope, is that the obit could be
contained in one of the following newspapers.
---------------
Newspapers circulating in County Sligo 1907:
Sligo Champion (1836 - in progress)
The Sligo Independent (1855 - 1962)
A total of 25 newspapers were published in Sligo between 1771 and
2001. The
two above were the only titles in 1907 but there could be newspapers
circulating from bordering counties.
Original copies of the Champion and the Independent are available for
research in Sligo County Library and the British National Library.
Incidentally, the Sligo Champion was founded by a William KELLY of
Collooney
(along with Dean James DONLEAVY).Originally a liberal paper it was
nationalist in 1907. The Independent was a conservative organ founded
by the
GILMORE brothers, Alexander and William.
