You have to buy these maps if you want them,
it's not a free map site - though looking doesn't cost
anything
The maps are the original 6" Ordnance Survey maps of
Ireland, which were
drawn up 1829-1843 - the maps have been scanned in
full colour and at high
resolution and they were originally drawn up to
accompany the Griffiths
Valuation.
These maps show evertything as it was then - there are
often huge
differences between the Ordnance Survey maps that I
would look at today and
these old maps - before this company came along, I had
access to both kinds,
so I know how much the landscape can differ between a
map produced by the
Ordnance Survey Office of a place as it is today or
was at the last revision
and the original maps.
This company has put the separate maps together, so
that if your ancestors
came from a place that straddled more than one of the
maps, they can produce
an image that takes in the whole area that you want.
You can personalise
these maps by indicating what you would like to have
written on the bottom
of the map e.g. "The home place of Mary O'Brien"
You can take a look at what the Past Homes site has to
offer the URL is
http://www.pasthomes.com/index.php?aid=83
Currently, they are offering their maps at a special
rate - plus, for the
month of November sales and shipping is free.
