Subject: Elspeth diminutive of Alison?
Date: 05 Jul 2000 22:33:19 GMT

In my genealogy research I have found an ancestor in Crail, Fife, Scotland
mentioned in the church records (1794-1847) as Alice, Alison, Elison and
Elspeth. Elspeth was used only once and I had thought it might be a mistake in
writing. However, I recently received information from someone that their
ancestor had also been the referred to as Alice, Alison and Elspeth. I could
understand Elspeth being used as a diminutive of Elizabeth but was it also
commonly used as a dim. for Alison?

Susanne
