But then again -- GEDCOM outdates on-line genealogy as we
know it today, and was NEVER intended to carry more than a
basic Name-date-place and the necessary links to produce a
family group sheet.

Sourcing wasn't part of its mandate.

People kept hanging tinsel on it and wondering why it
doesn't fly.
