There is now a Federal law which requires funeral directors to report
deaths to the Social Security Administration on the latter's "Notification
of Death" form within 24 hours.

This was originally told to me by a person in the SSA in a position to
require knowledge of such things, and just now confirmed by a phone call
to a local funeral director.
