I use FTM 4.0 and have tried both ways. I now keep only one data
base(with several dated backups). Along with the problems outlined by
the others that replied, you have to update more than one database each
time you add new information. This can be a real pain in the butt!
Also each time you add information to separate data, you run the risk of
making a mistake. When you find it, you have to remember to go back and
update any other data bases you have. I have one database that I call
"Working" that I put everything in and I make backups every time I
finish making changes. FTM is very user friendly when it comes to
creating new databases from your working database. If someone needs
information from a particular branch, I just create a small database
from that brach of the working database and pass it on, leaving my
working database in tact.
