Just to mix things up a bit, if you're dealing with a Greek family, your
mother's first cousin would be referred to as an uncle. I married into
a Greek family and I am eternally confused about the exact relationships
among the different relatives. I'm guessing that the title "uncle" is
more of a sign of respect but someone who is more in the know would have
to address this question. My husband has no answers for me, he just
shrugs and reiterates that his father's cousin, Aris is Theo (uncle)
Aris. I'd love to hear from anyone that has an explanation for this.
Are there other cultures who do this, thus contributing to the number of
postings (and confusion) relating to this question?
