I think the answer to the question is that you can not touch the stone at all
but could take a photograph. It takes some practice to do it right - the
right light and shadows etc. That will do no damage.

Shaving cream and other chemicals *may* hasten the deterioration of some
kinds of stones. If you don't know what you are doing, best not to do it.
Same with books - photocopy machines are playing havoc with our library
resources. Photocopy carefully.

I also think the big concern we should have is in preserving the stone or
book so that the next person ... and the next .. and so on ... can get
the information and that what you do to the stone doesn't make that more
difficult.
