Subject: Tombstones: Weathering rates of different kinds of stone

In a different thread it was implied that slate was an
easily-eroded stone. I was under the impression that the
opposite was true, and my experience finding gravesites
seems to bear this out: Slate tombstones are legible long
after other sorts are dust.

Am I mistaken? Can anyone point to scientific studies?
