If you have his name, you might try doing a search at

http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/

which is the Social Security Death Index. I often choose to do an
advanced search first, using last name and either birth year or
death year. You can plug in as much information as you know to
limit searches, but I usually choose to include the smallest amount
of information that still makes the returned results list easily
managed. I've found instances where, instead of a first name, they
have only a first initial listed.

If you find your person listed in the SSDI, it may provide the state
of last residence. That should help you narrow your search to a
specfic area.
