Hello Lesley,

>From the English side i don't know much, But to stay to the
Netherlands, Bernhard and Claus had the Titels from themselfs
(Meclenburg-Schwerin and Ambsberg)
It is princes Margriet But it is Mr. P. van Vollenhoven, their
childeren have no titels at all.
Prinses Irene has her prinses titel from the Bourbon Parma's she had
to give up her Titel Prinses van oranje , and her rigts on the Trone
etc. to get maried
To give Maxima her titel, there was a change in law ( from 1832)
that states that there would be no titels granted anymore.
The discusion is not focusd on the situation now, but at the mid
evial period, interesting to read is the laws Charles le magne (
Karel de grote) isued about that.
I agree (and that is what i wrote down) that knighthood is not
heretary, but to be alowed to it you had to show 8 quarters of
nobility. About bastardy look at bv, de Brederode's or even at
Charles le magne's children from his 9 relation ships ( not counting
his 3 mariages), Or Willem, Bastaard van Blois who inhereted Tholen
etc ( the familie coming from that branche still lives as commoners
unther the name van Bloois) Locking at the population of Europa in
that time, most of the people living today can bring back their
lines to nobility, but it does not mean that they are nobel (
meaning the legal right to bear titels etc) today.

Ton
