I am looking for information on Rebecca George who married Thomas
Slaton/Slayton.

Their daughter was Susan Slaton who married Joseph Harrison. Susan Slaton
and Joseph Harrison were my second great grandparents. Rebecca George and
Thomas Slayton were my third great grandparents.

According to Susan Slaton's death certificate, Rebecca George was born in
North Carolina and and Thomas Slaton was born in Virginia.

According to "Settlers of the Long Gray Trail", Susan Slaton was born in
Stokes County, NC. Susan was born 31 July 1846, so Rebecca George would
have been living in North Carolina at that time.

I found a marriage record for Rebecca George and Thomas Harrison for 14 Feb
1840 in Stokes County, NC.

Susan Slaton lived most of her life and was married in Jefferson County, TN.
I do not know for sure when she moved from North Carolina to Tennessee. I
have not had much luck finding her or her parents in census records.
However, I have found the following very suggestive census data from
Jefferson County, TN in 1850.

Slayton Thomas 32 M Laborer Va
Slayton Francis 33 F N.C.
Slayton Rebecca 7 F N.C.
Slayton John 5 M N.C.
Slayton Susan 3 F N.C.
Slayton Nancy 2 F N.C.

If only the wife's name were Rebecca instead of Francis, I would say we have
them. Everything else matches -- father's name, father's birthplace,
mother's birthplace, Susan's age, Susan's birthplace. But I think we have
them anyway. I think Francis Slayton is Rebecca Francis George or Francis
Rebecca George. (I would be happier if it were Frances instead of Francis,
but I think the spelling difference is not of much consequence.) I think
the family moved from North Carolina to Tennessee some time between 1848 and
1850, and that Susan Slaton lived in Jefferson County thereafter.

The following is my reasoning. Susan Slaton's first two daughters were Mary
Frances Harrison and Rhoda Rebecca Harrison. Joseph Harrison's mother was
Rhoda Maria Brown. I think Susan Slaton's mother was Frances Rebecca George
or Rebecca Frances George. So I think the first daughter took one name from
each grandmother, and the second daughter took one name from each
grandmother. Also, Susan's third daughter was named Nancy, and this would
suggest that the third daughter was named after Susan's younger sister.
Everything matches except that Francis isn't Rebecca. It's just too much to
match by coincidence, so Francis *has* to be Rebecca Frances -- or so the
moonbeams tell me.

Anyway, any information on Rebecca George would be much appreciated. Thanks
in advance.
