After a note from Marty Grant with a clue about Boyd's Marriage Index,
I went online and found access to the Index. There was no entry for a
Nicholas George and Margaret Anybody, but the listing below does give
an idea of the wide geographic distribution of the George surname. I
was surprised at how many Margaret Sawards there were, but....they were
all in Essex.

When I looked under Saward, I did find the record in question -- in
Ashdon, Essex. Marty had already given me that hint. I will order the
Ashdon, Essex marriage film from the FHL and see if the area for the
first name of the groom is totally blank or if there is some
possibility of making out something

No record for a John George and Jane Cole. However, prior to the
Marriage Act of 1753 persons were not required to have a license or an
officiant. They could simply exchange vows and present themselves to
the world as husband and wife. So it might have been with John George
and Jane Cole.
