Besides the difficulty of searching for GEORGE as a surname, I have in our
family WARREN, HUMPHREY, SHELTON (often recorded incorrectly as Sheldon) and
Jeffries (a variation is Jeffrey) which are troublesome but for some reason I
have had far more trouble search for GEORGE. I went to school with a second
cousin (surname George) who never had to deal with the Georgie Porgie
teasing. However, my Dad's first name was George and he was teased.
The English part of this family is not my research but I have had contact
with a number of folks who have worked on it. Assuming this is reasonably
correct the earliest one is Isaac George whose son Henry was married in 1584 in
Chelmsford England. His son John George was born in 1604 in Essex England and
died in 1678 in Isle of Wight County Virginia He was married to Jane Cole.
Issac George 1634-1689 m. Hester Fawden, died in Middlesex Co. VA
Robert George I 1665-1732 m. Sarah Elmore, died in Middlesex Co. VA
Richard George 1709-1773 m. Elizabeth Ann Mayo, died in Caroline Co. VA
Jonadab George 1742-1815,
Jordan George 1764-1840, m Rosamond Mattox , died in Russell Co. KY
Jonadab George 1787 m. E. M. "Polly" Hubbard
Ira Hubbard George 1816-1899 m. Agness Ellen George ( she was born 1820 in
VA. He died in Camden Co. MO as did Agnes. Recently, on a message board I
found her listed as Agnes Ellen Bradshaw. So far, I can find no trace of the
Bradshaw connection. Some believe that her father may have been a Robert
George somehow related to this main George family. Any enlightening information
would be appreciated.
Sarah Catherine George b. 1847 in Russell Co. KY, died after 1904 in Camden
Co. MO, m. John Walton Jeffries in MO. She was my great grandmother. My
mother's middle name, Sara, was to honor her.
I have some more information but since I am in the process of cleaning and
sorting my genealogy room, I can't lay my hands on it right now. I don't have
the George family on computer yet.
