Carole in Marietta, GA wants to know if the LDS has been approached about
possibly filming Ger-Volga records --
Carol you must be new to GR research. The LDS has been there, done that --
but got "kicked-out" of Russia as a "cult" religion before they could get a
decent start. They filmed the St.Petersburg records. Some of the Orthodox
priests did not like the proselytizing that Mormons tend to do when given half
a chance. As a result the Duma passed a law banning all religions that were
not established in the country before the Russian Revolution. So, we have a
snowball's chance in you know where of ever having the LDS film at the Volga
archives in our life time.

SUBJECT: RE: TAKING ADVANTAGE ? RUSSIAN CENSUS RECORDS
Vera, I think you make a very good point. I can't see there can be any
comparison between the American vs. Russian researcher because the Russian
researcher is at such a disadvantage. Circumstances alone make that pretty
clear. Getting on to the idea of helping repair the roof, etc., we would have
no way of know if the work ever got done. As some mentioned in other emails,
the German Govt. did several things to help the Saratov archives. Can the
German Govt. pay for and obtain microfilm of these Volga-German records? Has
this been tried yet? Has the LDS been approiached about possibly filming
these Ger-Volga records? Carole in Marietta, Ga. >>
