DESCRIPTION:

Migration from the Russian Empire by Bruce Kahn

Most experienced genealogists have been frustrated by the fact that the
passenger arrival records for the port of New
York are not indexed between the years 1847 and 1897. These are exactly
the years that a vast number of Jews from
Eastern Europe (including many of our ancestors) came to the US. These
passenger arrival records contain invaluable
genealogical information which can not be found anywhere else.

Finally, help has arrived! The Balch Center for Immigration Research in
Philadelphia has begun to publish a set of
indexes of these arrival records. The JGSR has acquired the first two
volumes of this series. Migration from the Russian
Empire: Lists of Passengers Arriving at the Port of New York, Edited by
Ira A. Glazier. These books will be a tremendous
help for people researching immmigrants who arrived after 1875. Volume 1
covers the period January 1875 to
September 1882, and Volume 2 covers the period October 1882 to April 1886.
The books need to be cataloged, so they
may not be available on our shelf in the JCC library right away.

This work contains data on passengers of Russian nationality who emigrated
to the United States from Russian
territories. Information was extracted from the original ship manifests
held at the Temple-Balch Center for Immigration
Research in Philadelphia.

There are short sections (4 pages each, not including tables) on
Historical Background and Causes of Russian Migration
in the Nineteenth Century and Origins, Destinations, and Personal
Characteristics of Migrants from the Russian Empire.

In this work, passenger lists are arranged in chronological order by date
of arrival, but there is a surname index in the
back of each volume. Information includes the passenger name, age, sex,
occupation, province (Russia, Finland, or
Poland), village, and intended destination.

I was told that our local genealogy library ordered the CDs of these books
from www.broderbund.com. I couldn't find them on this site or
www.ancestry.com. Maybe someone else can help out here.
